Dear Entrecard,

Predator Press

[LOBO]

My first email was just a simple suggestion, and the Entrecard site says, quote: "We're very keen for any feedback you can give. Complaints about broken things, stuff you like, things you think are pretty or ugly, or even questions you'd like answered."

I can't bring my original query up because it wasn't in conventional email. But my suggestion was "Instead of subverting the ads we spent our credits on, why don't you just phase in "Paid Ads" after 120 seconds or so?"

Brilliant, right?

The response was this:

"Hi,

Thank you for your email. Please restate your question because I'm unsure what you're asking. We have the sponsor ads which Entrecard reserves 15% of the ad network inventory for sponsors.

Please let us know if you have any other questions.

Entrecard Support

This prompted my response:

"Seriously.

-You have NO IDEA what I'm talking about? How about forwarding this email to one of your supervisors?

Lemme simplify:

When you do a "PAID AD" (aka an ad where you subvert our credits for cash), how about making the "PAID AD" (the ad where you subvert our credits for cash) phase in after a minute or so? That way our "CREDITS" -the mystical crap you made up so we get something for spreading the word about your site- is still actually worth something?

-And PS: does EC even have 300 people a day I can "drop" on anymore????"

:)

I don't speak Entrecard. Can you repost this in Klingon?

I can honestly say I've never heard of it, but just like any company that pushes "incentives", you have to spend a lot more than you'd ever need to in order to build up enough credits/points/etc. to get anything worth the attention. I used my frequent flyer miles to get a bike. Ironic, isn't it?

How are you posting in the future? This one is dated Saturday Oct 17th. Weird.

Hey, that's a great idea! I understood your idea, and I am just a curly haired cat.

I love their response. Gave me a good chuckle for the day. Or should I say...made me laugh...is that simple enough?

DG: Interestingly, Entrecard doesn't speak Entrecard.

Beau: Well if you can toss an hour or two a week at EC, you can get new people to show up. Few of them will stay and read, but since getting people to your site is often 95% of the battle it has some marginal uses.

But lately they have been making unpopular decisions, and I think their dwindling user pool is increasingly unhappy.

Chris: Change the date on the post after you post it (If you do it before it's posted, it will only delay the post.) I do it because I try and avoid having more than one post per day, and in this case I would have had to move two others back.

BTW, the lottery numbers are 9, 11, 22, 25, 40, and 49

Daisy: Isn't it? That way the "Harvesters" are happy and active. And the sites actually read get a bona-fide paid ad guaranteed. It's win-win it seems to me.

Shelly: Anytime I need to correspond with them, I get the feeling I get when the windshield wipers are on too fast. You know, when it's not raining hard enough for your slowest wiper settings? They skip excruciatingly across the windshield thud thud thud and you're thinking, "crap, that can't be good for the blades, but ..."

I made a request a month or so ago from my account email, and three days later they responded by asking me which profile I was.

-oooooh there was some cursing goin on on that day. :)

Yeah, you know it's always the same. People were all up in arms when Graham (original owner and founder) went with a few paid ads. Big deal! Now that he's sold out for good money I'm sure, it seems to be getting worse and worse for the members. Well, be careful what you wish for because you just may get it.

First - I would like to let you in on a little secret. The person who is answering those queries IS the supervisor. There is not a team of people working. There is only Andrew (?) who owns the company now that Graham (?) is gone; Cindy, who is supposed to be the "secretary" and public correspondent; and Richard, who is the IT guy behind the scenes.

Second - Yes, there are still plenty of active people in Entrecard. And many of us even stop and read...

Don: Amen. I've never had an expectation of Entrecard to do what they do for free, but many of the methods they've tried are counter-intuitive and growth prohibitive.

EC growth will be dependent largely on the same “Harvestors” I see everyone complaining about. And frankly, if you can hold someone’s attention after getting them to your site, that’s not EC’s fault. I see those bitchy posts and just think “Why don’t you just tell people that have never been here before your blog sucks?” haha

Seriously –and like I’m going to read every blog dropped on. I’m sorry, but blogs on coin collecting or Peruvian oil speculation might not get the same level of scrutiny.

But then again, I wouldn’t be at that blog otherwise, right? EC has given you a .000001% chance to grab my attention you wouldn’t otherwise have.

There’s a good balance to be found here … but I think EC has already decided, “Nobody is going to like our move here, and there is no point in listening to them bitch about it.”

Mom: I can’t speak on the first point, but I can on the second: thanks for reading!
